A bit more about tourism of Meghalaya

Dr. Chatterjee, former President of the International Geographical Union, and recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award in 1985, gave this state of India the name 'Meghalaya'.

However, during the British Raj in India, when Meghalaya was not formed yet, Shillong (which is now the capital of Meghalaya) was then the capital of Assam. It was then that this region (which now encompasses Meghalaya) was known as the 'Scotland of the East'.

Later, on 21st January 1972, Meghalaya was formed and given its own statehood, carved out of two districts from the State of Assam.

Meghalaya is one of the Seven Sisters of Northeast India and also is home to 'Mawsynram', the wettest region in the world.

Meghalaya has an agrarian economy and is considered among the richest botanical habitats of Asia. This mountainous region also breaks universal stereotypes by following the matrilineal system wherein instead of men, it is women who inherit the lineage and heritage property.
