In Khasi, the Umiam means "water of tears" and Dam Sait is the local name for Umiam Lake. This lake is also referred to as Bara Pani or Big Water. It is a reservoir in the Khasi hills, 15 kilometers north of Shillong. This lake encompasses an area of 220 square kilometers and is regarded as the largest artificial lake in the state of Meghalaya.
Umiam Lake has a history dating back to the early 1960s. During that time, the Assam State Electricity Board constructed it. The goal was to store water for use in hydroelectric power generators.
