Assam is considered the gateway to Northeast India because of its geographic location. It has an excellent road and rail connection with the rest parts of India via Guwahati which makes it very easy for tourists to enter this part of the country through this state. The second international airport of Northeast India has been proposed in the state which will make it more accessible to tourists.

Tourism is one of the most important industries in Assam because it brings revenue to the local economy. The State Government also promotes tourism by giving various concessions to tour operators, hoteliers, travel agents etc. Facilities are available at Lachit Nagar, Guwahati for visitors at a nominal rate. The largest museum of Assam is situated here which attracts history and archaeology lovers to the place.

In addition to its rich historical background, Assam is also famous for its wildlife sanctuaries and national parks. Almost all major rivers flow through this state including Brahmaputra River, Barak River and Dhansiri. The state has a large number of waterfalls that attract tourists from all over the world.

Guwahati was declared the cleanest city in India in Swachh Survekshan 2017. The result was announced on February 15 by Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs.

Geography of Assam

Most of the state is formed by the river Brahmaputra but many other small rivers flow through it like the Dhansiri River, Kopili River etc. The majority of these rivers originate from Arunachal Pradesh and come to Assam via Meghalaya. The climate in Assam is quite hot during summers but pleasant during the winter season because of its location near the Himalayas.

Climate & Weather

The climate of this state is tropical. It has very hot summers and moderate winters. The monsoon season starts from early June and lasts till September which accounts for nearly 80% of the rainfall of Assam. The best time to visit the place is during the winter months because of pleasant weather conditions during that period.

Best Time to visit Assam

The best time to visit Assam is between October and March. The temperature of the state during this period remains pleasant and comfortable (average 25-30C). Another season during which one can expect a very good climate in the state is the rainy season (June to September). However, this season is not recommended for tourism as it is the time of heavy rains and hence most of the water-bound activities like river cruising remain suspended.
