Because of its mesmerizing beauty, the Khasi Hills is also called “Scotland of the East.” If one looks at its ancient history then he will find that Neolith Sites (divisions during the stone age era) were discovered in the high elevations area of the Khasi Hills however one must also know that until the 19th century, the region of Khasi had the own kingdom which was later administered by the British.

The people of Khasi are known as the oldest ethnic group who settled here. The Khasis are known to be spread all around the state. The Khasi-Pnar are those who reside in the eastern part of Meghalaya, the ones who stay in the northern lowlands and foothills are called Bhoi whereas the Khasis who occupy southern tracts are called Wars.

The Khasi Hills is bifurcated into West Khasi Hills and East Khasi Hills. On 28th October 1976, the West Khasi Hills was formed in the State of Maharashtra. It is considered to be the largest amongst all the 11 districts of Meghalaya. It covers 2,748 square meters of area. It the also known to be the heart of Meghalaya since it is surrounded by Ri-bhoi district on the north, Karbi Anglong district on the northeast, Jaintia Hills district in the east, and Bangladesh on the south, and West Khasi in the west. The headquarter of this district is Shillong which is also the rock capital of Meghalaya.

One of the most interesting theories behind the origin of the Khasi tribe is that they originally abode to "The Seven Huts". According to mythology, this tribe was distributed into 16 families. The 7 out of 16 families were stuck on earth and the rest 9 of them were in heaven. The most compelling part is the 7 families had the liberty to travel to heaven as they please until the day when they were tricked. They were manipulated into cutting a divine tree which created a barrier between heaven and earth forever. This myth is considered as a metaphor amongst many people in the state and those who know this story. It explains the relation between nature and trees and how modern development is destructing nature.
