Earthquakes shake Meghalaya and Assam

On Monday, earthquakes of a magnitude of 3.9 each afflicted Meghalaya and Assam in less than 24 hours, according to an official statement.

The first quake, which occurred at 9.47 PM on Sunday and had its epicentre in Nongpoh, Meghalaya, was at a depth of 12 Km, while the second was located in Nagaon, Assam, and measured 55 kilometres deep.

According to news reports, after the second quake jolted Assam at 3.22 PM on Monday, tremors were felt in many other areas of northern and central parts of Assam.

According to authorities, no reports of property damage or deaths were recorded in either event.

Earthquakes are common in the region, which falls within a high seismic zone.

On April 28, 2021, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake shook Assam and portions of North-East India, making it one of the most severe quakes to hit the region in recent years.
