The state government of Meghalaya plans to erect life-size sculptures of three renowned freedom fighters – U Kiang Nangbah, U Tirot Sing, and Pa Togan Sangma- at the U Soso Tham Auditorium, State Central Library in Shillong, which falls under the aegis of the Department of Arts and Culture of Meghalaya.
The Minister-in-charge of the Arts and Culture Department, Sanbor Shullai, announced that the initiative was launched following input from Student Unions, NGOs, and the public.
“Since the department received its first instalment to begin the project, a joint examination was conducted today (Thursday), and a call for tenders will be issued as soon as feasible to allow the project to begin as soon as possible,” Shullai added.
Furthermore, the government has authorised Rs. 30 lakhs for the first phase, with a three-month deadline to complete it.
He also hoped that the three life-size statues of the state's liberation heroes would be unveiled on 15th August 2022, which would also commemorate India's 75th anniversary as a sovereign nation.
