Officials in Meghalaya said on Sunday that approximately 350 mobile towers would be built to ensure that all communities are connected by mobile service. According to them, Meghalaya has 6,839 villages of which 1,164 are not accessible through any mobile network.

At a cost of Rs 726.65 crore, the state's chief secretary recently reviewed the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) plan, which aims to provide mobile internet connections to 1,164 remote and uncovered communities in the northeastern state.

BSNL has given its go-ahead for the construction of 352 mobile towers to provide service to remote communities that have been left without coverage, according to the company.

"BSNL has given its approval for the installation of six mobile masts along National Highway 42 and National Highway 51 in Meghalaya," a senior BSNL official said.
