Sikkim is a favourite tourist destination. The main attractions are the Himalayan mountains, monasteries and hill stations, some of which are popular throughout the year. Among these are Yuksom, Dubdi Monastery, Menmecho Lake (Manchok), Yumthang Valley also known as "the valley above the clouds", Baba Mandir or Bhumey Hill etc.
There are many waterfalls in Sikkim like Tukdah Waterfall near Ravangla at an elevation of 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) and Lachung Falls near Lachen which is located at an altitude of 3,048 m (10,000 feet). The most attractive one among all is a picnic spot named Naga Falls, from where Sikkim is viewed in all its beauty.
Sikkim has also been identified by the Government of India as one of the areas where development needs to be focused under the National Rural Tourism Programme (NRTP).
Sikkim is also well known for its eco-tourism. Its natural beauty, pristine lakes, ethnic cultures are attributed to this sector in Sikkim which has grown immensely in recent years. There are over 1000 hotels all over Sikkim with the capital Gangtok having 5-star hotels.
One of the most popular treks in Sikkim is Rumtek to Dzongri traverse passes through dense forests, colourful Rhododendron groves, glittering alpine lakes and streams. It provides photo opportunities of rare Himalayan wildlife like Spotted Lhasa, Red Panda, Serow etc.
Sikkim is well known for its monasteries, beautiful locations and serene environments. The place provides an insight into the rich Tibetan culture which has been inherited by the local people of Sikkim. The state attracts a significant number of tourists every year due to its scenic beauty.
The best time to visit Sikkim is between the months of October and May. Sikkim has a very pleasant climate during this period. The temperature in winter hovers around 15°C while it rises up to 30°C in the summer season. There are also some monsoon showers from June to September which makes travelling difficult at times.
