Top Tourist Destinations to See in Tripura

Agartala

Agartala is the capital city of Tripura. The city has a number of sites that are popular with tourists including the Ujjayanta Palace which is now used as a museum, Jampui hill which offers panoramic views of the city and also features the "Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary" which is home to tigers, elephants, bears among other animals. Many tribal people still dress in their traditional costumes when they come to the city.

Tourism is almost entirely limited to Agartala - however, there are places outside of it that are worth visiting for those who have more time at their disposal. One such location is Melaghar which was once the royal capital of Tripura before it moved to Udaipur later on. Another place of interest nearby is Unakoti which features ancient rock-cut sculptures in stone.

Ujjayanta Palace

The Ujjayanta Palace is located about three kilometres north of Agartala. It was constructed in 1897 by King Radha Kishore Manikya. The total area of the complex is roughly about 200 acres with a number of buildings within it including the main palace, Tripura Government Museum etc.

Neermahal Palace

The Neermahal Palace is a palace in the middle of the Gomati River which is located about 15 Kilometers from Agartala. The name comes from "Neer" meaning water and "Mahl" meaning palace, so literally, it means a Water Palace. It was constructed in the 1930s by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya with Italian marble. The palace has been declared as a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India since 1993.

Melaghar

About 10 miles north of Agartala, Melaghar is where Tripura's royal family originally resided before moving to Udaipur in the eighteenth century. In addition to being an interesting historical site, Melaghar is surrounded by hills that are covered in dense forest. It features a number of temples, lakes and waterfalls among other attractions.

Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium

The Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium is one of the largest stadiums in Tripura. It has a seating capacity of roughly about 30,000 people. It is used for outdoor sports such as cricket, football etc. The stadium hosted its first match when West Indies played against Australia during the 2007 Cricket World Cup. It also hosts international cricket matches between India's Under-19 team and Bangladesh's Under-19 team - along with national-level school tournaments.

Jampui Hill & Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary

Located around 30 kilometres from Agartala Jampui hill offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding areas. Animals that can be seen here include tigers, elephants, bears among other animals. A sanctuary close by also serves as an elephant breeding centre where visitors are allowed to see some young ones being bottle-fed. There are many tribal people who still live here and can be seen in their traditional costumes.

Dharmanagar

Located around 90 kilometres from Agartala Dharmanagar is an important historical site for the Royal Family of Tripura. The main attractions here include Rajbari (the palace), Matabari (a temple) and Jampui hill.

Kailashahar

Located in the northeast of Agartala, Kailashahar offers a number of temples and waterfalls besides boasting an ancient Buddhist culture. It also serves as the entry point to Tripura's hill districts which offer views of mountains and lakes.

Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary

Located near Dharmanagar, this wildlife sanctuary has a number of wild animals including elephants. It is also home to many medicinal plants and is also known for its monsoon forests.

Tripura Government Museum

Located in Agartala, the Tripura government museum has a wide collection of artefacts and antiques from the days of the Manikya dynasty. It has exhibits ranging from the 4th century to medieval times.

Unakoti

Because of Unakoti's rock-cut carvings in stone, it features on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list under "Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka". Most of these carvings were produced during the 7th - 12th century AD. These include images of various Hindu deities as well as Buddhist figures along with scenes from various epics.

Tripura Tribal Museum & Research Centre

The Tripura Tribal Museum & Research Centre opened to the public in September 1995 holds exhibits that are related to the tribal culture of the state.

Agartala Botanical Garden

Located about 5 miles from Agartala, this garden is home to a variety of local flora and fauna as well as some rare species from abroad. Besides being a tourist destination it also serves as an educational centre for students learning biology and botany. It features a number of ponds and waterfalls along with a greenhouse that contains orchids among other plants.

Jagannath Temple, Tripura

This temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath and is located in Devipur near Agartala. It was built by the Tripura royal family and constructed in 1926.
